MetaLAN is a systems management, remote computing, software audit / software license tracking and hardware inventory tool. The tool will let you manage/monitor a large range of activities. System administrators are able to keep track of the LAN related issues quite easily. Things that you could do with this tool include remote control, monitor, plan hardware and software upgrades using the included reports and health monitoring. What software is installed on the network can be easily made out. You will be able to manage software audit / license management too. Admins do not need to physically visit the clients to actually install or diagnose anything. Health monitoring of the desktops on the network, storage reporting, health monitoring, Wake on LAN, remote shutdown as well as booting, SNMP network scan are some more of the activities admins can access easily.
Systems Management Software often gets complicated to install due to dependencies and prerequisites. This tool uses resident OS features mostly and thus is easy to set up. There are two versions of the software available; stand-alone or as a server. Stand-alone only requires MetaLAN Administrator to be installed. This is useful for simple and small nets, when the administrator can run probes to the limited number of clients. With larger networks or several administrators using MetaLAN, in server mode, the tool periodically scans the network and stores the collected information in a database for quick retrieval. Several admins can work off the data in the databases. The interface should be very easy to navigate for IT people who typically will be the admins. This is a very handy and affordable too for administering your LAN.
